In a digital world increasingly shaped by commercial platforms, Codeberg stands out as a refreshing alternative: a democratic, community-driven, non-profit software development platform built for and by free software enthusiasts. Operated by the Berlin-based association Codeberg e.V., it’s powered by Forgejo — a self-hostable Git-based forge — and offers a privacy-friendly, non-commercial space for developers to collaborate, share, and build meaningful projects.
Whether you’re launching your first open-source repository, contributing to others, or creating a public-facing site with Codeberg Pages, the platform provides all the essential tools without the corporate strings. What truly sets Codeberg apart is its mission: to preserve and nurture free software development by avoiding dependencies on proprietary services and fostering a vibrant, user-governed ecosystem.
Since 2023 I’m not only using Codeberg as my favourite code hosting platform. I am also a happy supporting member of the association. As someone actively working within this space, I’ve found Codeberg to be more than just a hosting platform — it’s a community where ideas flourish, contributions are valued, and digital autonomy is celebrated. Therefore I am also occasionally contributing to the platform, which gives me joy on the one hand but also leverages my skill on the amazing GoLang programming language.
